Esther Aarts Illustration — Pushing her luck and ours

Esther Aarts, an illustrator and designer from Nijmegen in the Netherlands illustrates charming vintage-inspired images as well as hand lettered typography on postcards, posters and commissioned editorial work. What I've found most curious about her work however is the printing method she's used for this collection of postcards titled, Pushing Your Luck. Much of her work is printed via letterpress, however these postcards have been printed with a long forgotten printing technique called stencil printing or often referred to as Ditto/mimeograph printing. I grew up on the sweet smell of Ditto copies in the classroom. I'm excited about the creative possibilities with this marriage of old tech/new tech as the cost of printing is relatively inexpensive and the results are so old school. When they arrive in the mail, breathe deeply and be transported to the third grade in 1966.
