Print Magazine's Creativity & Commerce

Print Magazine has an annual competition called Creativity and Commerce that showcases outstanding business-focused print and interactive design from around the world.  This highly selective competition features the best branding campaigns, websites, advertising, corporate brochures, annual reports, identity systems, packaging, catalogs, motion graphics, and signage produced to communicate with a company’s audience, investors, employees, or the public at large. The deadline for the 2011 competition is October 15. There is not a student or unpublished category for this competition.

It appears this is the fourth time for this competition (the first was in 2008). The winners for the 2010 C+C competition have not been announced (those will be in the October issue of Print) but I was struck by the list of winners from the first two years.

In 2008, first place was awarded to Opolis Design in Portland which was co-founded by alum Dan Richards (BFA 1991). Third place was awarded to One Trick Pony in Hammonton, New Jersey. Alum Patrick Macomber (BFA 2008) has worked at that studio since he completed his degree. Unfortunately the links at the Print web site for these campaigns from 2008 are broken, so I can't show you examples.

In the 2009 competition, first place was awarded to Hybrid Design in San Francisco. Hybrid was co-founded by alumni Bryan Flynn (BFA 1993) and Dora Drimalas (BFA 1996). This award-winning public service campaign was designed to reach high school students to sensitize them to the deadliness of distracted driving (shown at left, to see more visit the studio web site). Really, really smart work.

So of the six studios who won awards in the first two years, three of them were either founded by, or employ, our alumni. That seems like a big damn deal to me! Belated congrats to Patrick, Dan, Dora and Bryan for the awards, fame, kudos and the great work. You make us proud.
