Summer Illustration & Information Design Work

This summer fourteen brave students researched the oil spill in the Gulf (and possible consequences), America's over dependence on oil and suggested solutions to these energy problems as our visual theme while we explored illustrating with an analog vibe using digital media. Students learned how to make images with Adobe Illustrator (primarily) that did not display the tell-tale points and paths one usually comes to expect with digital illustration. We painted, stamped and made tons of marks with lots unexpected tools—scanned it all in and let the magic ensue. The work above is from freshly graduated (this past Saturday) Ty Richards. Nice work Ty! I'll be posting lots more from the summer class over the next few weeks.

Michele Wong's summer class designed handsome large format information design posters that inform the audience about the intricacies of this most difficult subject. Although both classes were initially 'bummed' about the topic, lots of thoughtful discussion was generated about the impact of the spill and what we might learn from this catastrophic event. There will be a show September 13-17 in the lightwell gallery in the art building displaying the work from both classes. I'll have more details in the next few days.
