UNT Alumni in NYC

While visiting New York City a week ago with my family, I had the opportunity to meet up with number of our Communication Design alumni living and working in New York City at my favorite coffee shop, La Lanterna DiVittorio on Saturday, July 31. Pictured here left to right are Josh English (BFA '00 & Creative Director at Chad Lavigne—a packaging design house), Cassandra Zimmerman (BFA '99 & Associate Creative Director at Sullivan), Chris King (BFA '08 & new Art Director for Melville House Publishing), David Widagdo (BFA '97 & Design Director at Estee Lauder), me (MFA '97), Dana Tanamachi (BFA '08 & Designer for Louise Fili, LTD) and Ricky Ferrer (BFA '05 & Senior Designer at PIX Design). Other alumni arriving after the picture was taken were John Custer (BFA '10—even though he completed the Communication Design program in '09— & intern at Pentagram New York), Andrea Levitan (BFA '95 & freelance designer—which in her case is NOT code for out-of-work!) and Alex Boulware (BFA '10 & Designer at Raison Pure). Chris reported that had just accepted a new job as the art director for Melville Publishing in Brooklyn the day before. Alex announced that his internship at Raison Pure had been converted into a full-time design position! And Andrea (Andi when she was in school here) failed to announce that it was her birthday!

It was gratifying to hear that all of them felt well prepared at UNT to meet the challenges of their careers. And great to hear that all of them believed that the student portfolios coming out of UNT rival or are better than the portfolios coming out of the big design schools in New York! My thanks to all of these alumni who were able to spend a random Saturday morning with me on short notice!
