Two Project Opportunities for Undergrad Com Design Majors

Project Opp No. 1 (Open to UNT Com Design Majors who have reached the 3000- or 4000-level of our program ONLY):

Dr. Priscilla Connors, a Nutritionist in UNT’s School of Merchandising and Hospitality Management, has recently received grant funding from the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) to conduct research that involves studying how middle school and high school students plan, eat and then dispose of their meals (or portions of them) in cafeteria settings. She needs to hire an undergraduate com design major ($10 per hour for approximately 100 hours over the course of about 10 to 12 weeks this semester) to shoot, digitally manipulate and then archive photos of middle school and high school cafeteria lunch trays. While she realizes that this may not be the most awe-inspiring photo shoot some of you will ever do, it would be a great indoctrination for one or perhaps two of you re: how design processes and empirical research processes can be of mutual benefit to each other. And... ummm... it's also a PAYING GIG. And who knows what creative uses you could make of a library of images comprised of lunch tray leavings... ’Could fuel content for a cool website, or perhaps a kinetic media piece...

She met with Michael Gibson to discuss the possibility of hiring one of you late last week, and he suggested that she should try to hire a com design major with some photographic and digital image manipulation experience who also had the ability to contribute to this type of a research project. There are quite a few of our 3000-level and 4000-level students in this program who have the skills and the smarts necessary to do this. If you're interested in this opportunity, please contact Dr. Connors at:

Project Opp No. 2 (Open to UNT Com Design Majors who have reached the 3000- or 4000-level of our program ONLY, or first-year MFA candidates):

Professor Jenny Vogel, who, along with Professor Shane Mecklenburger, runs the New Media program in UNT CVAD, is looking for a Com Design major at this level to design and prepare for printing a unique gallery exhibition announcement. This piece is to be tabloid sized (i.e. the size of the Dallas Observer newspaper, more or less), and contain 8 pages. It is to be printed using black ink only on very cheap, recycled paper (likely some sort of newsprint). Professor Vogel will provide the images/imagery and copy, but it will be up to the individual designer who takes this on to determine the overall look and feel of the piece. A great deal of creative freedom is not only allowed re: the conceptual and aesthetic approach to the design of this piece, but is absolutely necessary to its success.

If you're interested in pursuing this opportunity, please contact Professor Vogel at:
